‘The Titan Games’ is currently accepting applications, so what the heck are you waiting for?
Stop whatever you’re doing and start practicing your pushups and pull-ups. The Rock’s got a new fitness reality show coming out, and it’s open to everyone.
Yep, that’s right. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is bringing a fitness competition to NBC, and it’s currently accepting applications. The three obvious questions here are as follows:
1. What kind of fitness competition is this?
2. What exactly does one have to do to get on The Rock’s fitness reality show?
We’ve got some answers for two of three, at least. First of all, the idea behind The Titan Games is to “offer everyday people the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to compete in epic head-to-head challenges designed to test mind, body and heart,” according to its website. There aren’t any details on what these challenges will consist of, but the website promises they’ll be “physical challenges of epic proportions.” We certainly wouldn’t expect anything less from The Rock, who’ll be fighting a giant mutant ape in one of his upcoming movies.
Second, what kind of chance does a regular guy (or gal) have of getting on the show? Per the application, all a person has to do is submit a three-minute video describing themselves and showing off their fitness. There’s also opportunity to write a bit more about yourself, and then, of course, there’s a small “fitness test” to complete on camera. It has three parts: a core test (hold a plank for as long as possible); an endurance test (jump rope for two minutes); and a strength test. The strength test is a descending ladder of pull-ups and pushups, starting with five of each, then four of each, all the way down to one rep of each. Time to start working on that pull-up strength.
Unfortunately we’re just as baffled as the rest of you as to how exactly The Rock is finding time to host a new reality show. Maybe that time machine joke Johnson had with LeBron James wasn’t really a joke after all.
Johnson said while on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon that he drew inspiration for the show from one of his all-time favorite fitness reality shows, American Ninja Warrior. Yes, you’re understanding this correctly: The Titan Games is the making of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson — a man who single-handedly gives a new meaning to fitness — and draws inspiration from American Ninja Warrior. This should be good. And tough as hell, to say the least.
